So Many Years

An audio-visual project created in collaboration with Beth Walker.
Envisaged and developed remotely over a six-month period, this audio-visual collaborative project emerged from exchanging ideas and discussing each artist's respective creative processes. It explores how the steps taken to create sound or visuals can inspire and translate into each other’s mediums.
Initially, Beth introduced natural printing, exploring shapes, colours, and textures derived from foraged flora and fauna. This inspired Somin to transform non-musical field recordings made in India and on South Devon beaches into tonal and textural musical elements. From that point onward, the flow of ideas unravelled rapidly, connecting Somin’s base in London with Beth in Lisbon and back again.
The project's name reflects both the life cycles of natural materials and the racially inspired riots of Summer 2024. The history and memory of these ancient living things far outlive any single human generation, yet collectively, across multiple generations, these narratives are stored and played out.
One of two collaborative projects with Visual lead artists.
